How we built the infrastructure for up to 2.5 million gamers for Playkey.net
There are three things gamers appreciate in a product: gameplay, graphics and minimal response time. Gameplay and graphics are what the developer is responsible for. But for providing speed you need a strong infrastructure. It impacts the quality of streaming and gaming process, and a gamers’ good mood depends on it.
Playkey.net is a cloud gaming platform that enables games to be run on popular devices, including laptops, even weak non-gaming PCs, as well as devices using macOS.
Playkey technology is unique as the gaming is run in the cloud — a network of the company’s remote data centers — and the user simply receives a video stream at 5 to 10 Mbps. Playkey uses a proprietary technology for encoding, streaming and decoding video image data, which allows for faster streaming graphics data transmission and better image quality. There is no need to install the game and upgrade your device. Cloud gaming is as easy as watching videos online.
Playkey’s mission is to make games accessible to all users anywhere in the world on any device connected to the Internet.
Building a proprietary infrastructure is very expensive
Building a necessary Internet infrastructure is likely to be inefficient for most gaming platforms: it requires dedicated channels of up to 100 Gbps (video streaming), highly efficient servers with expensive display cards that consume a lot of energy (~7 kWh), and maintenance costs. The system should remain stable at the sudden surge in attendance.
“When developing infrastructure we pay great attention to servers, data centers and everything associated with their operation. G‑Core Labs offered the most rapid solution in response to our request. The company has already prepared a platform to deploy servers, as well as an offer of services to ensure a stable high-speed broadband Internet connection of at least 50 Mbps per user, which, in case of cloud gaming platform, is very important both for us and for the user”
What was Playkey’s demand
By 2016, Playkey’s cloud gaming platform was emerging from a startup to showing potential to the global gaming market, all that was then needed was the right global infrastructure Playkey then reached out to G‑Core Labs.
“It was critical for us to establish a cooperation where the partner is indeed a partner rather than a mere outsourcing performer”
We provided Playkey with a powerful infrastructure
With G‑Core Labs Playkey’s infrastructure now consists of more than 100 servers in Frankfurt, London and Moscow. Playkey’s platform has locations in Russia and the CIS (2014), England (2016), Germany (2018), and the company plans further expansion into America and South Korea.
Playkey’s cloud gaming platform is regularly used by more than 2.5 million players a month and this figure and success continues to grow.
“Playkey had the highest requirements regarding infrastructure since that is the foundation of the business. If there are infrastructure problems, no matter how good the product is, users will leave. We have extensive experience in providing infrastructure services for gaming, and we, like no other, understand the problems of this industry”
“G‑Core Labs is a long-term partner for us in a variety of projects in multiple regions. The company’s experts quickly respond to incoming requests, and if there is any on-site technical work they will always notify you about it. During two years of cooperation, we have never encountered bureaucratic delays or extraordinary events, and that allows us to greatly appreciate the partnership between G‑Core Labs and Playkey”
