Why transcode a video?

Transcoding changes the video format and quality. This is necessary so that all your users can watch the broadcast on any device—from Smart TV to a mobile phone—and with any internet connection, such as home Wi-Fi and unstable mobile internet.

Different devices support different transfer protocols. Transcoding means you don’t have to make separate broadcasts for each type of device. You download a video in a format convenient for you, and the stream is converted and delivered to all devices.

Also, if you are streaming in 4K, some smartphones and PCs may not support such a high quality. For such devices, the quality is downgraded.

How does transcoding help avoid buffering?

Transcoding is used for adaptive bitrate—changing the video quality in accordance with the speed of the internet connection. Several streams are created on the server with different speeds (bitrates) in different qualities. The player in the browser receives all these streams, estimates the speed of the internet connection, and selects the appropriate one.

With a good, stable connection, the video will be available to the user in the highest quality. And if the bandwidth is lower, the video quality will be downgraded.
