Create a live stream (old user interface)

The article will help those who activated "Streaming" before January 31, 2022. If you have activated the service later, you interact with a different user interface and may refer to the following instruction: Create a live stream (new user interface).

To start broadcasting create a stream:

1. Go to the Streaming tab → Live streams → Create live stream.

2. Specify your stream name.

3. Choose the connection type: push or pull.

Pull Streaming

Description

Use this streaming type if:

  • you have your own media-server;
  • you stream in RTMP/RTSP and transcoding to HLS for CDN streaming is needed.

With Pull Publishing the stream is running on your server. Our media server takes it and changes the streaming protocol from RTMP/RTSP to HLS. CDN servers deliver the stream via HLS to end users.

Setup

Put a link to a stream from your origin in the URL field.

Push Streaming

Description

You send the stream to us using an encoder.

Use RTMP/RTSP protocols to push the stream.

Use this streaming type if:

  • you don't have a media server;
  • your media server responds slowly and you don't want to overload it;
  • a private IP address is assigned to your media server.

Setup

You need both a URL and a key to send the stream from your encoder to our server. Stream key is the part of the link after /in. For example, the URL in the link on the screenshot is rtmp://vp-push-ix.gcdn.co/in/ , and all information after URL is the key -  9894?dbe53f9.

You will see them once you create a stream. Go back to editor (Live streams -> Edit) and copy it from the Push URL field.

Also, Backup Push URL is available. Use this link to prevent broadcast interruption if there are technical problems on the main stream.

To do this send the same content to the Push URL and Backup Push URL. During a broadcast, the Push URL is considered the priority, but if for some reason this stream stops working, the broadcast continues with the backup Backup Push URL.

4. Choose a CDN Resource from the drop-down list to override your default CDN Resource settings. More about CDN Resource integration you can read in the "CDN Integration" article.

5. Set the format of your stream to display content correctly. To do this, select the format in the Projection section. There are 4 broadcast formats are available:

6. The Start record button enables the live stream recording and saves it in the Video section. Read more about this option in the "Live stream recording" article.

7. You can activate the DVR option in the stream settings. Read more about this option in the "DVR" article.
